Making Australia a better place

Since the “handover” of the Foundation’s major heritage project “Albany’s Historic Whaling Station” to the local community via Albany Heritage Foundation Inc, the Foundation is focussing on a few significant issues. Our Social InJustice Program “Let’s be Fair” aims to address the present uninhibited “trial by media” journalism and social media approach to pre-convicted individuals and the ex-gratia basis of compensation for wrongful incarceration.

Our not-for-profit author’s publishing platform BeInspiredBooks.com launching in mid 2024 aims to fill a one-stop-shop (concept-to-publication) niche for short (and long) story, poetry and course authors of all ages. Primary focus will be on products that inspire.

We also support other organisations like Pictures in Motion to achieve their aims.

Making Australia a better place

What have we done?

Since our founding in 1976, our team has been involved in a range of innovative projects and programs of benefit the wider community. These have ranged from providing landing lights for a country airstrip for the Royal Flying Doctor Service to pioneering computerised medical alert systems and to restoring Australia’s last derelict whaling station into an award-winning iconic heritage tourist attraction.

Inspirational Book Distribution

We believe that there is a need to encourage and assist authors (particularly young writers) to realise their dreams.

Social Justice Program

We are committed to addressing anomalies in Western Australia’s justice system. There is no clear framework to compensate those wrongly or fraudulently convicted and imprisoned.

Pictures in Motion

The Foundation’s community and cultural ethos dictates that our team apply its expertise to helping other community organisation optimise their own operations.

About Us

Our Mission& Vision

Our current Mission is built upon three fundamental pillars:

Advancing culture;
Promoting and protecting human rights; and
Advancing social or public welfare.

A more elaborate explanation of these pillars and how we aim to achieve them is outlined in the Objects clause in our Constitution.

Our Vision is simply captured by our by-line: ”Making Australia a better place”

Advancing Culture

With an enviable track record of converting a derelict industrial site into an award-winning iconic heritage attraction, we look to assist other organisations and individuals to achieve their aspirations – particularly where it may involve preservation of heritage or inspiration to young people.

Human Rights

Our Jaycees (now known as JCI) heritage underpins our interest in promoting and protecting human rights and advancing public debate or changes to laws to deliver equity and fairness to members of the Australian community.

Social Welfare

One of our objectives particularly aimed at the disadvantaged aged and youth is to advance social or public welfare through development or support of programs that may relieve poverty or disadvantage.

Our Causes

What We Do

Founded on the basis of innovative community projects and programs, our Board welcomes project ideas and requests for assistance from individuals and organisations that will deliver our vision. These are initially assessed against a matrix before a decision is made to undertake a detailed plan and proposal that takes into account availability of human and financial resources and potential social impact.

Inspirational Book Distribution

By providing a one-stop-shop that offers all the resources to assist – from idea and design to actual production and distribution – the Foundation hopes to fill that void. Our BeInspiredBooks.com not-for-profit publishing division has developed an authors’ publishing platform for sale and distribution of inspirational books and poetry.

Social Justice Program

Currently, an “ex-gratia” payment relies on the whim of the sitting Attorney-General.

Of wider impact is the reputational damage caused by pre-conviction “trial by media” – regardless of the outcome of any legal proceedings. We believe that Western Australia should adopt the Queensland model of suppressing name publication until conviction (with some qualified exceptions) and we are working towards delivering that objective.

Pictures in Motion

One such current program involves helping Pictures in Motion to identify and establish a permanent location in which to house Western Australia’s film and television heritage equipment as a working exhibit. A secondary aim is to assist in the development of a sustainable operational and business model.

How to get involved

We are always on the look-out for committed people wanting to contribute to society.
This could be by way of ideas, time, expertise or contribution of funds or resources for any of our programs.
We also encourage those with aspirations for Board membership who can add complementary skill sets to enhance decision making to consider a role. All our Board members come from a background of personal development through community involvement and welcome the opportunity to mentor younger people in the leadership skills the communities of today desperately need.

Our Projects & Programs

Past project successes

One Man’s Journey

A response to a request for sponsorship of the Western Australian Children’s Choir led to a more elaborate plan. Initial discussions with the late George Fay (the Choir’s Musical Director) about underwriting a CD evolved into a significant fund-raising project to benefit Motor Neurone Disease Associations throughout Australia.

Vital Call Emergency Service

The Foundation pioneered the introduction of computerised medical alert systems in Western Australia to reduce the reliance on the hospital system for the elderly and infirm. The Vital Call monitoring system (with its daily check-in facility) enabled users to remain in the comfort and security of their own home – knowing that help was a button-push away.

Australia’s Last Whaling Station

Our predecessor structure – The Jaycees Community Foundation Inc (now named Albany Heritage Foundation Inc) was gifted Australia’s last operating whaling station in 1980 as a derelict industrial site. Many considered our vision of “what could be” to be an impossible dream.
